📝 Markdown Guide

What is Markdown?

Markdown is a simple way to format text using plain characters. Jot writes and stores your notes as plain .md files so they're always readable anywhere — even without Jot.

Basic Syntax

What you type What it renders as
# Heading 1Large heading
## Heading 2Medium heading
**bold**bold
_italic_italic
- itemBullet list item
1. itemNumbered list item
`code`inline code
[text](url)Hyperlink

Using the Formatting Bar

You don't need to memorize Markdown syntax — the formatting bar above the keyboard inserts it for you:

  • Select text first, then tap Bold or Italic to wrap it
  • Tap a heading button to insert the heading marker at the start of the current line
  • Tap the list icon and choose Bullet or Numbered list
💡 Tip: Tap the preview eye icon in the toolbar to instantly see your formatted note without leaving the editor.

⚙️ Settings & Preferences

Theme

  • System: Follows your iPhone's Light/Dark mode automatically
  • Light: Always use the light theme

🔧 Troubleshooting

iCloud Sync not working

Solution:

  • Make sure you're signed into iCloud in iOS Settings → [Your Name]
  • Confirm iCloud Drive is enabled in Settings → [Your Name] → iCloud → iCloud Drive
  • Toggle iCloud Sync off and back on in Jot Settings, then restart the app
  • Check available iCloud storage — a full quota will prevent syncing

Notes not appearing on another device

Solution:

  • Ensure iCloud Sync is enabled on both devices
  • Tap Sync Now in Jot Settings to force a refresh
  • Give iCloud a moment — large notes or slow connections can delay sync
  • Verify both devices are signed into the same Apple ID

A note appears blank after syncing

Solution: This can happen if the file hasn't fully downloaded from iCloud yet. Pull down on the note list to trigger a refresh and wait a moment for the download to complete.

Formatting toolbar not showing

Solution: The formatting bar appears above the keyboard when the note editor is active. Tap inside the note body to bring up the keyboard and the toolbar will appear.

Search not finding a note

Solution: Search works on locally downloaded notes. If iCloud Sync is on and a note hasn't fully downloaded, it may not appear in results. Wait for the download to complete or tap Sync Now.
